Seems like a bit of overkill, instead, you could use rsync. It's already installed on every Mac, after all: /usr/bin/rsync
Really needs a nice app over the top though, something where you could just say "link this file and that file, and on attaching to the network sync to the master, and on detaching, sync to the local"

I guess on Unix, you could use Subversion/CVS.
