Apple has released an update for its AirPort wireless software. Meanwhile, new NPD data suggests the company is on track to sell around 16 million iPods this quarter. And Apple is offering some significantly discounted previous generation MacBook models.

AirPort Update 2006-002

Apple on Wednesday afternoon released AirPort Update 2006-002 (1.3MB), which improves AirPort compatibility for its new line of Core 2 Duo notebook computers.

These models include MacBook Pro (15-inch Core 2 Duo), MacBook Pro (17-inch Core 2 Duo) and MacBook (13-inch Core 2 Duo).

NPD data suggests 15.5M - 16M iPods

In the third of as many research notes released by PiperJaffray analyst Gene Munster on Wednesday, the analyst said an extrapolation of NPD data from the first two months of Apple's December holiday quarter leads him to expect iPod unit sales will total between 15.5 million - 16 million.

"Our analysis of iPod unit data from NPD for the months of October and November leads us to expect iPod shipments in the range of 15.5m-16m for the Dec-06 quarter (our model calls for 14.7m iPods in the quarter and Street consensus is 15.0m)," the analyst wrote.

Munster said the 15.5m-16m unit range is "based on various assumptions" and therefore believes investors should supplement the data point with other information.

Core Duo MacBook Pros at discount

Meanwhile, a tipster points out that Apple through its online store is looking to move some refurbished 15-inch Core Duo MacBook Pro models and is offering considerable discounts as a result.

The Mac maker has discounted both the matte- and glossy-screened version of the previous generation 2.16GHz models by $1000, or a savings of over 40 percent. It's also selling several other refurbished Core Duo 13-inch MacBook and 17-inch MacBook Pro models at discounts of around 30 percent.

Judging by this year's sales and the introduction of the 2G Shuffle, I expect the actual numbers to be around 22 million.

I agree. I went for a walk today, a three mile route. Passed ten people. Young people running; middle aged guys running; older women power walking. All ten had iPods. Counting my Nano with the FM remote, that makes eleven right there. If every three miles in America was similarly equipped....

The best discount on the Refurbished Core Duo MacBooks is $300. Far from $1000 or 40% off. Got me excited about maybe grabbing another MacBook for like $500.

Did they update the article, because now it specifically states MacBook Pros at $1000 or 40% off?

I saw the post below last night and made an immediate decision to order one of the refurbished MacBook Pro models (2.16GHz, Core Duo, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, 256MB for the graphics card, Firewire 400). Just got an email that it has shipped and will be here by Tuesday.

I have been thinking of getting a new laptop for a while (I'm still using the 500MHz Pismo bought 6 years ago) and this deal at $1499 (40% off the original list price of $2499) felt like the right one. I was going to wait for the new models expected early next year but was also realizing I wouldn't be able to afford a new one anyway.

    So, for the questions:

    1. Was it a good/bad decision to get the Core Duo vs. the Core 2 Duo in terms of longevity? (at $1499)

    2. Am I missing anything technically significant by going with the older chip? I'm sure I have the power and speed I need in this machine.

    3. Anyone have experience with Apple's refurbished products?

    Thanks for your feedback.

for the price its very good. Performance wise the core 2 duo is just about the same. The only main difference is the Core 2 Duo has 64bit extensions, and the Core Duo is 32bit.

Other than that, the machines are almost the same, and thats a really good price for such a nice machine. As for being refurb, it shouldnt matter, as Apple warrantys them just like new machines.

    1) At that price I think you got a fantastic deal.

    2) Besides the slight gain in CPU speed and loss of energy consumption, you also get half the RAM and a slower, single-layer DVD burner. But, you can always add RAM on the cheap and I seriiously doubt you need to have a dual-layre burner. Especially at the current cost of dual-layer discs compared to single-layer discs.

    3) Yep. I've purchased all my Macs refurbished and have had zero problems with them. Except for a bad powersupply on a 12" Powerbook. An easy fix.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Looks like the computer is arriving tomorrow (Monday). Glad to hear you think the price and decision made sense.

Can't imagine what it would be like to finally have a laptop that is up-to-date (well almost) -- has been a while.

    Thanks.
