IMAC and AOL instant messenger problem

I have an old imac that was working well until my son downloaded a newer version of the AOL instant messenger. Now, when the computer comes on, the AOL IM launches once or twice and freezes the computer. Is there anyway for me to boot up in a "safe" mode like PC's do so I can remove this IM? ANY help would be appreciated. It is using OS 9.2 I think.
