i have a 24 inch imac with gigabit ethernet. i was connecting from fios dsl to last years model airport express (10/100). so i thought i was loosing speed secondary to airport base. i hooked up netgear 10/100/1000 5 port switcher and all works well but it is all at 100 speeds (amber). so is it not possible to get gigabit transfer speeds with internet connection? my hook up is fast but i am trying to optimize set up. also my house is all cat 5. do you need cat 6 for gigabit transfer?

is new airport extreme any faster than prev for 802.11 g wireless, wired connections. it too is 10/100.

Cat5e or Cat6 is better for GigabitEthernet. AFAIK.

"Although 1000BASE-T was designed for use with Cat 5 cable, the tighter specifications associated with Cat 5e cable and connectors make it an excellent choice for use with 1000BASE-T"

You'll need to check your Gigabit Switcher as well to figure out why everything is not running at 1000Mbit/sec - try disconnecting any 10/100 devices first and see if you get 1000Mbit/sec.

    Just some random ideas...
