In addition, ...set up user controls via an optional add-on dubbed Private Domain Service with Federated Authentication.

AOL worked with Apple to develop its authentication and directory technology.

Yes, this is future Apple hardware.

It sure sounds like software to me.

It is server software... sorry. Could easily be turned into a hardware product, 1U style. Runs on Red Hat Linux 7.1 w/ Oracle 9i or Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server (x86 only) w/ Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or Oracle 9i.

    Very interesting... No OSX...

Actually, I would be very surprised if we didn't see this fully incorporated into Mac OS X Server. If so, it would further improve the cost/benefit of OS X Server and and hardware.

My understanding is that Apple/AOL basically built a Jabber/AIM gateway. I *think* that Rendezvous chat is essentially Jabber+discovery. Apple hands over OpenDirectory, and if Apple hooks this into OS X, we may have it as well. AOL benefits by allowing everyone onto it's network without having to *host* everyone on it's network, and a check for the privilege.

    If so, coooool.

I don't think this enterprise gateway thing has anything to do with Jabber; it looks like native AIM protocol all the way.
