S-Video - only gray?

I just bought an Mini-VGA to S-Video / Composite Adapter for my iBook G4 - I plug it in, attach the cables, turn on the TV, only to see a greyscale Image.

My TV supports 100hz, and I tried every option (Color profile, all resolutions, 50hz and 60hz), still, only greyscale.

Any ideas?

Isn't S-Video an NTSC thing? Are you sure your iBook is outputting PAL?

PAL output would be the first thing I would check as well (S-vid isn't exclusively NTSC, the format just never caught on much in Europe because of the superior SCART connectors, but obviously you have a TV with S input).

Since S carries the chroma and luma signals on separate channels, you'll get a grey-scale image (luma only) if there is any interruption in the chroma (color) signal path, so If your machine is outputting PAL OK, I would carefully check the interconnects and cabling you're using, with a continuity tester or multimeter if possible.

Thanks a buch for all your kind answers!

The problem was the TV - I figured out that there's some kind of special S-Video Mode... : /

Once selected, it went without a hitch.
