Make sure you have the Mail menu item "Make Attachements Windows Friendly" ticked.
Word is a waste, AbiWord is free and very friendly to Apple OSX.
It may be friendly and it is very nice to have development of an open source word processor for the Mac platform. But Abiword is not stable on the Mac, and has (at least in the last iterations) a horrible font rendering. Also, the Interface is very un-maclike, and the integration with built-in spell checking and other system services is terribly lacking. Better to go for NeoOffice for free alternative. Or spend in the vicinity of 30$ for Mellel, Nisus Writer or similar native word processors with word export options.

This is needed for people on windows to be able to open it.
Also the above suggestion is a good idea.
Does the word document have the extension .doc on the end?
