Web development advice...?

Ok, so I have had a few people ask where where to get started working on web development. I find myself not being able to explain some things very well, so I figured I would ask around here for some good beginner books on html, xhtml, and css. My knowledge is limited in xhtml, and I dont know css (I really want to learn though). Anyone have any suggestions?

wow the first link is perfect for them, thanx a lot. I looked through the first few lessons, it really takes you step buy step. I looked at a few of the CSS links too, I think it's going to take some time for me to learn it, it doesn't seem so easy. Thanks a lot for the links.
