Increase volume past 100%, is it possible?

I have an .mkv video on my iMac that was unfortunately encoded with the audio too soft, even at full volume. Is there a way to kind of "magnify" the volume?

It's not the speakers, other videos play just fine. It's the volume of the sound in the video.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

If you extract the audio track - not sure what matroska tools there are - and load the track into an audio program like Audacity or something, you just increase the gain. You have to be careful of clipping but if the signal to noise ratio of the original clip is high enough it should be fine. Then take the louder clip and join it back with the video.
