Open iChat, log in with your normal screen name or .mac account. Press Command-Shift-N to open a new IM. Type in +1 then the area code and number. So if you were sending a text message to 123-456-7890 you would send the IM to +11234567890. Once you send it an auto response will come back saying it was sent, you can they converse just as your would in an IM. The normal receive rates for the other person will apply, but there is no charge to you.
That's funny, in Australia it costs to send SMS but is free to receive.
