Mac Pro - Added 2 more gb, "About" shows 2gb total, System Profiler shows 4gb

Hello

I have a 2.66ghz Mac Pro with the current Ram configuration:

2x512mb default Apple Ram (DIMM Riser A, 1 and 2)

2x512mb Crucial Ram (DIMM Riser A, 3 and 4)

Today I put in another 2gb: 2x1gb into DIMM Riser B slots 1 and 2.

The computer booted fine. Clicking the blue apple "About This Mac" showed:

Memory: 1.95gb 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

However, if I go into System Profiler and click Hardware -> Memory, I see all 6 sticks of RAM. Each has a status of 'OK' with the correct speed and type. The new 1gb sticks are recognized here, but not by the OS. Booting into Windows via Bootcamp only shows 2gb as well.

I tried alternating the sticks of RAM to troubleshoot. For example:

- If I ONLY put in the 2gb of new RAM... the computer boots up showing 2gb.

- If I put in the 2gb of new ram and 1gb of existing RAM, only 2gb is recognized (yet system profile still shows 4 sticks).

Any ideas? I'm probably gonna have to return the new RAM... but I have no idea what the problem is or why the OS isn't recognizing it.

Adam

I have never heard of that before. That is quite the conundrum. Perhaps it's just the brand. Usually Crucial is great, but one never knows with RAM.

Try resetting your SMC on the Mac Pro.

    - Shut Down.

    - Open and remove the metallic outer door.

    - Press the SMC_RST switch that is located slightly below and to the right of the row of diagnostic LEDs. Use a non-metallic, non-conductive object, such as a wooden pencil.

    - Replace the metallic outer door.

    - Start up your computer.

    Good luck!

Why would this be necessary? One would think things would be "plug and play". Is this a known issue? Or, how (and why) would it occur?

I am considering adding another Gig of RAM to my 2.66 Ghz Mac Pro, and I am actually looking at purchasing the 1 Gig (2 512 MB sticks) from Crucial.
