Edit -> Spelling -> Check Spelling As You Type

    or

Control-click/right-click on a text entry box and do the same.

I don't know how to turn it on permanantly, as far as I know it is not currently possible. Possibly for speed reasons?

It only hits the CPU when you are typing and enter a whitespace (or if you arrow over to a whitespace). Even then the CPU hit is relatively tiny. I suspect this is simply a bug that hasn't been completely addressed yet. Other apps like OmniWeb seem to remember this just fine.

Gee whiz! I'm beginning to like safari more than Chimera.
