Market Share for iPhone.

Remember the iPod?

It was paired with one app that crossed over as well.

As I recall, the iPod became quite the success story.

Same deal with iPhone and Safari on Windows. No big deal.

Just another world takeover by Apple.

i'm using the browser right now. the load time is really fast, but because i only have 512 ram on a shitty windows machine, it freezes a bit. but it is faster than fire fox.

for some reason this post went to the top of the page.

This message posted from Safari for Windows!

Here's another possible reason: WebKit. WebKit is the core of ... Dashboard. Widgets for Windows!!!

So far it's crashed/locked up on me three times.

It's kinda strange, though ... it's, in some way, a disincentive to switch.

Steve clearly wants to continue the invasion of Apple into Microsofts territory. Bold move, Steve... and it will continue.

I don't really get the point of doing this.

Will Safari eat into IE's market share, or will it just take away from FireFox? And even then, what's the benefit to Apple?

Is there a problem with eating into Firefox marketshare?

The only good thing here would be marketshare. More people have Safari, more people use Safari, more web sites make Safari happy web sites. But thats not a big bonus for us...it actually kind of sucks.

    Whats going on here...

Well, it would be nice to see a severe reduction in IE market share to stop idiots making websites that only work with IE.

Here's the reason in a nutshell...

Safari = iPhone Development / Testing Environment!

    From: www.macrumors.com

Innovative new way for developing for mobile applications. based on iphone having full safari engine...gives us tremendous capability web 2.0 + AJAX apps

you can write amazing Web 2.0 apps that work exactly like apps on the iPhone

integrate w/ iphone services...can make calls, send e-mails, google maps, etc.

instant distribution, easy to update, secure same as amazon or bank....run safely on iphone with no sdk needed just need web standards...you can go live on june 29

you can build custom apps tha have the look and feel of the iPhone demoing iphone onscreen...all apps run within safari

With more people using Safari when it is available for Windows, there _should_ be more incentive to have standards based web pages instead of pages that don't work properly with Safari...big assumption

I tried Safari on Windows. Just for a few minutes. Rendering of CSS based websites sucks completely. Many problems with links that are not shown. Not only small sites, but Amazon as well. Sites that work with Safari on Mac very well look awful.

    At the moment, not usable.

Don't know if the sites are no compliant to the standards or it is a Safari problem - but there is still a long way to go.

    oh.

    That settles it then.

very nice read of what is going on.

I for one welcome our windoze breathing, widget writing overloards....

( and I kinda called it - how devs would write for iphone anyways...)

Yup, it's not just about development, it's about the fact that all web stuff on iPhone is done through safari.

Dave, you beat me to it. I think there's no coincidence in the timing of the SafariWin and iPhone apps-on-Safari segments in the keynote.

As with the iPod, for iPhone to truly sell well, Apple needs to do two things (imo):

    1) Make it compatible with Vista/XP.

    2) Allow third-party smart-phone app dev, for biz users, on par with existing smart-phone competition.

SafariWin does two things towards that goal:

    1) Allows Win-based dev/testing of iPhone applets (as Dave already posted).

    2) The subtle key ingredient: Allows Vista users to run the apps on both their iPhone and Vista desktop! ie: Vista-based consumers who use the iPhone, can use/sync their iPhone applets on their Vista desktop via SafariWin.
