Macbook won't fire firewire drive

I bought a Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Hard Drive recently. I have it connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station and it works very well. The problem I have is when hooking it up directly to my computer. I tried doing this on both firewire 400 and firewire 800 since I have a lot of data to transfer. It won't even show up on my screen. I know the computer is seeing it's there because when I remove the drive it says how I remove a device improperly. Even Disk Utility shows it but I can't find it in finder and elsewhere. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Go into Disk Utility when it is plugged in and if the partition on the left is greyed out, select it and hit mount at the top right of the window.

If it is mounted, check you haven't just removed the drive from the sidebar and are not showing the drives on the desktop. In the Finder, use the Go menu and choose computer then drag it back into the sidebar if you see it.
