I have no doubts that the user interface is nothing short of amazing to use but that is of no use to me if I amnot able to do the things I am able to do now with any currentr phone.

Surley you can understand that logic.

They all say something different, but the common denominator is that they're all useless in solving the problem.

Calling customer service is just the BEGINNING of one's problems when trying to activate the phone. Check out the forums on MacRumors or Apple.com.....this is a disaster for thousands of people.

Exaggeration is not helpful to anyone. While we feel empathy for you, this is certainly not a disaster by any means (that would be like your house burning down, losing your family and watching your iPhone melt) and the MacRumors board is not filled with thousands of people with disastrous activation problems.

As an example there has been one particular poster, pjamac, that perservered for about as long as you. That poster found out that their account had basically been sitting stagnant for about half a day. They called the number given to you above, said they had to wait for about 30 minutes, and the person from AT&T on that number is able to activate you directly. Now the poster is up and running.

Keep at it. If this is the worst thing that will ever happen to you in your life, consider yourself extremely fortunate. Without exaggerating, thousands of us are wishing we had an iPhone that you have in your possession.

Here is a good link from a well known Apple dev that used the phone number with success. Good luck.

Getting back on topic and the reason I came to this thread...

Upgrades will be the huge difference maker for the iPhone as it compares to its competitors. One can seriously purchase the iPhone and have confidence that it won't be old generation within the 2 year contract. Apple has set this up in its financial reporting for iPhone profits and the news (rumors) that iChat and other features are shortly on tap is enormous.

The media hate will just seem like, well, hate after awhile...

Come on, Apple, you can do it. Fill in the missing features and you will have even more iPhone users!

    Dear zorinlynx,

We want you to know that we are listening and we care. As soon as we can take a breather from selling close to a million units in the first week of iPhone availability we'll direct all our resources toward making sure you're satisfied enough to grace us with your purchase. Your "disdain", as you say, has touched us all here at Apple, Inc deeply. We sincerely apologize.

    ...

Less specifically-timed upgrades are also slated for the future, if the report proves accurate. iWork should be available in mobile form and will at the very least allow the display of Keynote slideshows beyond today's basic Excel and Word viewing in the iPhone's e-mail client. A simple auto-discovering file sharing system, "Spotlight-like" search, and widescreen typing should all upgrade the phone's core features at varying points throughout the current phone's life cycle.

I would like to know when the ability to both take videos and send them (and pictures) through text messages is going to be available.

Please no. Flash is probably one of the top 5 worst things about the web.

I'll be using it all the time to check my Apple stock... seriously!

Having bought in a long time ago, I'm a happy camper.

All of these updates will be most welcome, although I'm happy as can be with my iPhone. Each time I use it I enjoy it more.

Perhaps, but they easily *COULD*. Sprint allows tethering for the same price. AT&T should join the club and be more useful for its customers.

The feature additions in this article sound a little too much like a "wish list." Some may happen, but I'm not holding my breath on seeing all of them.

Flash need to go away. I think they are pushing away from proprietary formats despite its ubiquity. I really don't think Apple will ever support Flash on the iPhone.

I doubt it will happen. SMS is the lowest common denominator for sending a simple text message to an from a cheap phone. From Apple's POV they are generous for even includng this archiac and rubimentary form of text messaging. If you want to send images just use the mail client.. assuming the destination has a robust email viewer.

I'm truly sorry to hear that. What a pain in the ass and you can't even use the iPhone's basic features until it's activated.

Segue... I was certain that all those iPhone training videos would come on the iPhone for use prior to activating and syncing. I was dead wrong.

10M through 2008. 18 months. It looks they sold over a 250 million in the first 24 hours. I think 1M in the first week and 10M before the end of the 2007 is doable . 1M units will give Apple a 0.1% installed base or an 80-85% marketshare for the week of June 29th.

Hands down, this is the finest version 1.0 product I've ever owned.

The predicted updates will be great, but I suspect anyone who has used one of these for a couple of hours is already sold for life. I'm one of those lucky souls who bought AAPL around $8 (it was actually $16 pre-split) and playing with this iPhone has convinced me it will double again before next January's Jobsnote. Happy days indeed.

Bring on the mobile file access (hopefully through .Mac and coverflow) and all sorts of other neat features. But if you are WAITING for this stuff before buying an iPhone, you're missing out big-time. This thing is a revelation.

FYI: This was typed [quickly and with two thumbs] on my iPhone

Flash is just a tool. Its merit, or lack there of, all depends on who is creating the program. Hopefully along with enabling Flash, they will also provide a way to turn it off.

well honestly with real 3d party apps, we wouldnt need updates. Apple updates would still be nice for their ease of use and intergation however, 3d party developers often produce very usfull apps. I also dont just want 3d party apps but entire 3d party OS support, probably will never happen. Either that or the ability to modify the current os with a tool like interface builder. While most people would continue to choose using the current apps and OS, these additions would also satisfy the more technical croud. This may also result in more problems which is probably why apple chose not to do it.

As of July 1st it will be illegal in california, home to all those Apple employees with iPhones to use their iPhones in their autos UNLESS there is handsfree use.

That means Voice dialing, NOT touch dialing. How could they miss such a key feature?

They have the bluetooth headsets, why no handsfree dialing? It is a fundamental here.

HOLY SHIT, 250 million units in 24 hours. That almost as if 1 in every 24 people world wide bought one with in 24 hours of its realease. Just imagine what will happen in the first month!!!

(yes i know you probably ment 250,000 but it was just too funny to pass up. Sorry for the jerk move )

Doesn't matter, Flash is out there on web sites. So your solution instead is to just NOT allow safair to render it?

Making a lot of websites useless? Not a smart idea.

Exactly ... especially now when Apple advertize iPhone's Safari as "real internet". How real is this when i cant even check my website with it ? ( I'm using Flash intro and flash nav bar )
