VLC

.5.0 is out. WOW does it suck. It not only plays stuff it used to play fine with completely scratchy audio (LOUD screeches, I warn you!) but also takes over my iBook entirely. Force Quit won't work, no apps or Dock respond. I opened a music vid and hit the space bar a few times first. I had to sit for 20 mins and watch it play through a few times. VLC .5.0 is unuseable. Is this just because my iBook 500 is slow? And jeez does the new interface blow. How can it be so hard to just copy the QuickTime GUI? These people must be windows programmers. Honestly it seems like no one outside Mac progammers can make a good GUI.

So, will a new VLC come out? Does VLC .5 have these problems on faster computers? I had quit everything, even the Finder, the first time I tried it. Jeez. So much potential but so much suckiness.

Would it be possible/wouldn't it be better if someone just added all of VLC's abilities in to a codec for QuickTime? The 3ivx codec for example kicks ass and without it I couldn't watch most of my movies. VLC opens stuff QT w/ 3ivx just can't, but the player itself is God-awful.

Wow...do I think that your problem is cpu or installation specific. I ran it on my machine to test out a .bin image of an svcd last night and the first thing I noticed was the quantum leap in quality of video rendering and general stability.

It does drop frames when resizing the window, but it politely warns you that its done so and lets you move on.

I'm running a G4 pb 667DVI with 10.2.3, so that might explain the difference.

But I'm surprised to hear that it's causing you so many problems. Haven't tried it on my wife's dual-gigger yet, so this is just a one computer experience. But I'd say that this version is infinitely more usable than the last.

    Anyone else?

Sigh. Seriously, guys, if you don't want VLC, don't use it, but don't complain if people spend valuable time working on it, okay? It's free and nobody forces you to use it.

Mplayer is a lot faster for me, and doesn't use up nearly as much CPU, but it doesn't play from VCD or SVCD (on Darwin/OSX), so I have to use both anyway.

i agree... VLC isnt good... its a crappy port. I had the same experience as Aquatic. I wanted to see if its DVD playing power was fixed and man was that a mistake... It works ok when its in windowed mode but when u go full screen... WATCH OUT! It'll lock u up faster than u can blink an eye. I also agree that MPlayer 1.1 is the better choice. It's got a simpler interface and its easier to use. I noticed something about it.. lol In its menu it says "Hide MP3 Player". Luckily I have the development tools installed so I can change that.. heheh... They havent changed that from the previous releases...

    Anywho... g2g... Im at school....
