networking speed question

hi all. i have been going crazy trying to understand this one.

i had a powermac g5 dual 2.0. this was attached to ethernet by way of a regular 10baseT cable modem from my cable company that was plugged directly into an airport extreme (UFO type) router and then a cable was run from that into the G5. internet page loading was very fast on my g5. i now had to get rid of the router and g5 and have the cable modem plugged into my new blackbook 2.16 and its slow as hell! page loads take forever. what the heck is going on?!

why would plugging the same cable into my macbook be slower than plugging it into the routher then to the g5? does this make sense? am i missing something obvious? is something wrong with my macbook?

thanks.
