Going to create a game...

Ok all, I am in need of some serious help. I think I ought to point out a couple of things first:
  • Yes, I know how to program.

  • Yes, I know game creation is long, teadious, and very hard

  • I don't have much artistic ability

  • I have a lot of back-end programming, and I am rather good at plot

Now, all of that being said, I need some help. As you can see from point three, I need to have some artistic ability to make a decent game. Now, here is the basis of what I am trying to do. I am thinking something like Final Fantasy, that style of RPG. Here are some of the main characters that I plan on doing:
  • Rhalis - Female - Red hair, grey eyes

  • Dhagred - Male - Grey hair/balding, brown eyes, older

  • Phoat - Male - Short blonde hair, brown eyes

  • Kelia - Female - Silver long hair, silver eyes

  • Semelia - Female - Black hair, black eyes, very dark, Necromancer

  • Trakar - Male - Reddish-brown short hair, lanky, almost ghostly

  • Flenier - Male - Bald, blue eyes, pugilist

  • Bekhai - Female - Brown shoulder length hair, brown eyes, Paladin-esque

I need some help doing concept art. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and mentioned in the credits once I get done. BTW - all of these will be player controlled characters.

Check out http://www.deviantart.com/ for concept art ideas. The artworks are very interesting, though the people there seem a bit, well, deviant, to say the least. \

You need to describe the characters better. Like say Rhalis - is she warrior like or more priestess or nymph-esque, elfin? anime cutie? sheena of the jungle?

Plot is good, but in literature character development is important too.

Don't worry about the artistic side. You can't do everything yourself. And character concept artists basically draw like 10-30 different characters a day when they are inspired...

Think of yourself as the movie director, or writer-producer-director in this case. You need some dedicated art specialists/ collaborators. Concept artists, 3D artists, lighting, animation, texture artists for example whole 'nother speciality....

You probably need another dedicated level/map/gameworld designer...

My only advice is not too bite off more than you can chew, and also to leverage open-source wherever it makes sense.

May I ask why you want to make this game?

Well, for starters, I have always wanted to. It has been kinda like an obsession for me. Also, it is a case of trying to expand and stretch my capabilities to the fullest.

Well, actually I purposely made it that vague. I wanted to see what some people thought, and what their imaginations entailed. I am busy trying to create the formulas for the engine right now, and I just wanted to see how people would react to those names and those general descriptions. Obviously, some I have more of an idea for, while others I wanted to see what struck people.

Good luck. I hope you don't have a job to get in the way of your progress, because it will take a lot of your time. You may want to shoot some of the guys from "ATMOS" an email. They are four or five guys who were more-or-less amateurs when they developed the "Nova" version of Escape Velocity. They had assistance from Ambrosia as well. I seem to remember that they all ended up quitting their jobs and spent quite a bit of time on the project, but if you're serious, I bet they will be happy to give you some tips.
