Have I totally missed the train on the student discount of all sorts?! Just called up Apple to pre-order the iPod Touch and was informed that the student discount is no longer!!!!! Am I going mad? what is the cheapest way to get this item asides from taking one?

the student discount lasts until the 16th. you were mis informed i believe. unless you mean on ipods. then you're correct i believe. which leaves the cheapest way to get one is to buy a computer from apple and get the nano price discounted. that is of course if they allow that offer to take hold with the new ipods.
