why is itunes deleting some songs randomly?

ok ive had this problem before and it seems to happen every few months. usually its about 20 or so songs this time it was 95. itunes will delete them from the itunes folder then say it cant find the file. whats going on? o and its always free songs (shhhh) that get deleted never ones from the itunes store.
