power cord/power supply query

I have an iBook G4, whose power supply cord started to fray. I temporarily fixed it with some shrink tubing, but a day or two ago, it started to go weird on me- flip-flopping between charging and not charging, while plugged in.

I bought a replacement and plugged it in.

This is what happened:

I plugged the new one in and it shows the charging icon, 30%.

It sits at 30% for about 5 minutes.

I pull it out and it reads 28%.

So while it's plugged in, it says it's charging, but its really draining- and not displaying it as such.

I just plugged in the old one, and now it's charging correctly, though i have to fool with the cord to get it to sit right.

What's going on? Any ideas?

    How old is the battery?

I've had to replace mine in the laptops I own ever 2-3 years or so. The symptoms are suspiciously like what you've described...batteries would act flakey. That and I'd have them take a look at that power supply.

I wouldn't buy anything 'till the problem's figured out.

Mine is just over 2 years old.

I already bought the replacement power cord- guess I should check the return policy, damn.

What symptoms did your battery start to show? I have no idea how I was supposed to know it was the battery and not the flaky power cord...
