Macbook random restarts & desktop crashes...

My girlfriend is on her second MacBook (the first one was replaced after 4 logic board failures in 6, by which point they had upgraded the range, so not all bad!). Every now and then when she closes the thing to put it to sleep you hear the restarting chimes and it reboots itself. When it does this it seems to crash the desktop as well. Any picture set to the desktop is replaced with a plain blue screen, and you cannot launch any apps or documents that are on the desktop (cannot double-click to launch, or single click to highlight - not even the HDD icon).

If you go into System Preferences then you can change the desktop picture and it updates the little preview in the Preferences pane, but the actual desktop remains plain blue. You can also open any documents saved on the desktop if you navigate to them in the finder, and there doesn't seem to be any other problems with the laptop.

The only way to get it to go back to normal is to restart it, then everything works fine.

Anyone got any ideas what;s going on? Is it something that needs seeing to? She has apple care, and it is about 4 months since it was replaced, I guess the warranty starts over from that point?
