I am at my wit's end (possible iPod vs. seagate external harddrive issue)

I have troubleshot everything I can think of to fix my problem. I hope someone here can help me. I recently bought a 500G seagate freepro external hard drive to use as a backup for my itunes music files. I autobacked all my files to the ext HD and everything plays fine on my itunes library on my pc (I set the path in itunes to the new ext drive);everything plays fine on my ipod even when I have it plugged into the PC and use it as the library. But I find I cannot now use my ipod to manage my own music and dump new files into it. It goes through the three steps process: processes the new songs, says it is copying to the ipod, you can even see it subtracting memory MB, but when it gets to the final step, which is to actually store the music on the ipod, it dumps it out and the memory shoots back ot its original amount.

I have tried to reset the path to all my drives seperately (C,E,and F), reinstalled three differetn versions of itunes, and used a new USB. Nothing works.

I would really appreciate any ideas anyone might have to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Nickolas.
