iMac problem...please help
I have an Intel imac 20". not the newest model, the one before. I have 2 gb ram, and I clean it often. The only issue I seem to have is when I type in forums, in Word, or other things, I sometimes get these dots or hyphen looking things show up when I backspace. It doesnt happen all the time, but its rather annoying. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, and/or have any type of solution/s. I thought maybe the processor or ram was being used heavily, and that would cause it to happen, but after cleaning my system up and noticing that i have over 1.4 gb ram available, I still see them. HELP!

BTW, how much backspacing do you do that this is a problem?
The next time that you have the problem, copy it and paste it into a post. Then, maybe, we can offer a solution.

I could type "the" then a space, for example, and hit the delete key and a * would show up, replace the asterik with a period though, meaning its in the upper location.
For example:
Im having a prbolem with my (I notice that the words are wrong and when I hit the delete key back to having)
Im having * ******* **** ** (like i said earlier though, its periods, not asteriks in those spots)
hope that helps

Sorry. I thought I could help, but in many years of using computers, I've never seen your problem. It's interesting that you get an upper 'period' with each letter deleted.
If it happened only in Word, I'd think it was a function of the word processor, but ....
For example, in Word, if you type three hyphens or 3 asterisks, etc., and then hit the return (enter) key, you get a line across the page.
Here is what it looks like. Look when I hit enter, or space forward, then back. You will see these little dots show up. Even on the cursor itself, there is one.
If it was just in Word, I would chalk it up to Microsoft's general suckage. But in Safari, Finder, etc. that's another issue. I would probably recommend that you back up any critical data, and reformat your hard drive and start with a fresh copy of Mac OS X. See if that helps. If the problem disappears, replace your data back into the computer. If that brings the problem back, it's something in your data. If it's gone still, it was something in your system files and you likely cleared it.
If, for some reason, it's still there immediately after the reinstall, take it in to a Genius Bar or an Apple Specialist.
