iMac Superdive Is DEAD!

Help! I own an iMac 17 inch Intel Core Duo with a gig of RAM and 160g HD. I have had it since March 2006 and the superdrive had died. I called Apple to see how much it would cost to get a new one installed and they quoted me $250. That?s not going to happen so I want to buy an external superdrive but it must be bootable so I can install 10.5. Anyone have any suggestions on what kind of superdrive I can buy to make this work? Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, this is the major problem with the iMacs - the older ones might not be that difficult to repair though, you just unscrew the screws at the bottom and the whole back of the machine comes off.

The Intel Macs can boot from USB2 and they are cheaper than the firewire ones.

Yeah, Apple's optical drives are almost as much of a rip-off as their RAM.



I would recommend getting a slot-load online and installing it yourself, but I wouldn't wish that repair job on Satan.
