using an iphone without a sim?

Just curious - can I get an iphone without AT&T service - pop out the SIM and just use it as an ipod and for WiFi web-surfing? I know the itouch can do this, but I may change over the AT&T in the future (I have Verizon right now and not willing to switch at this moment). Any thoughts.... info? Thanks

As it comes in the box? No. iPhone activation is required in order for any functions (other than calling 911) to work. This will require an activated SIM card. There are underground ways of bypassing this, but you'll be waiting for each successive iPhone software/firmware update to be cracked before you'll be able to update your iPhone.

There are some hacks for activating the phone without AT&T's SIM card. That said, once the phone is activated (either legally through AT&T or third party unlocking hacks), SIM card is not required for non phone features (e.g., WiFi Internet, iPod).
