I don't think no one really knows, but according to that clock thing, probably spring time. I would bet 10.1.x may be released in the meantime.

I'd say March, from the clock analogy. And it'd better be ****ing free!! 10.1 still has major outstanding bugs.

Remember, even if it's free, it'll cost you $20.

Well not if you get the instant update.

10.1.3 should be launched in February.

10.2 should be released in the May to July timeframe.

10.1.3 will be minor and be delivered via software update.

March is 12 0'clock, why would Apple throw off their own time table? It will be released in March. They are throwing out beta builds almost daily now for 10.2 so I can;t see why it would take 5 months to get a final.

    Expect March for 10.2

At that point OS X will be a year old. Dont count on anymore updates being free. Maybe for people who bought 10.1, but even that is pushing it. I expect regular upgrade pricing... Anything better then that will be gravy....

If that's the case, then I will honestly and truly be disappointed with Apple's software development people. I've excused the beta-quality release of 10.0 and the still incomplete but better 10.1, but neither would have passed quality control if I had anything to do with their releases. Some of the simplest things still haven't been addressed. Apple's been putting the spin 'n polish on some parts while completely forgetting others.

    Just ask yourself this:

    When did Apple buy NeXT?

    When were we promised Rhapsody?

So, how many years has Apple been working os OSX?

I've heard it won't be out until this Summer. If, like 10.1, it's a virtual rewrite requiring an entire disc to upgrade, it will cost at least $20 to upgrade. My guess it will cost more for those who bought 10.0, less for those that cost 10.l. Those coupons that came with the OS X purchase have to be used at some point.

If there are major functional changes (and not just a lot of performance enhancements and a few gizmos like spring-loaded folders) they will probably charge existing users $49 for it. I don't think we're going to see the old classic OS tricks where 8, 8.5 and 9.0 were all $99 upgrades. Maybe with 10.5 but not 10.2...

If on the other hand is it merely a bunch of speed improvements, bug fixes and a few gizmos, I doubt Apple will charge much more than the fee for the CD and shipment - maybe $29. I don't think you'll see a downloadable version because Apple has to recoup their development expenses somehow, even if they're only making $10 or $12 a copy.

Obviously if you haven't bought OS X up to that point it will be the usual $129 or whatever it is.

I don't think we'll see the big upgrade price ($99) until the advent of 10.5 or OS XI (or whatever the hell the end up calling it).

Apple may also give anybody who buys a new iMac (or any new hardware) a free (shipping and CD cost only) upgrade once 10.2 comes out. I'm not sure about everybody else, but I expect it to be like 10.1 was.

    starfleetX,

You know no matter how far along OS X comes, someone out there will always say "but its still beta quality so therefore the next 40 updates should be free.....".

OS X was first released in March. By next March if you still expect a free update you really are just being silly.

I've seen 10.2 6B11 all over Carracho. I don't pirate stuff from there, but was wondering if anyone here has given it a shot.

RailHeadDesign.com He gets the beta builds and about 2 weeks ago, he said they were flying nightly builds off the server every few days.

Also, March is the 12:00 oclock X analogy. I think Apple will release 10.2 in March and skip the 10.1.3 update. When everyone was expecting 10.1.3 Apple came out and said they were'nt releasing updates so often and they were going to spend more time fixing the bugs then thrwoing uot quick updates. To me that means no 10.1.3 but rather everything will be fixed and addressed in 10.2.

apple is a hardware company. They make there money off Hardware. They make OS X because with out a killer OS no one needs to buy there Hardware. Apple dose not care about making money off OS X. why do you think OS X has no Serial Number? They just charged $129 for it to make a little extra cash but that is not why they spent 10 year righting OS X. To charge $129 for it. They made OS X it to sell Hardware! Apple is way more interested in getting every one using OS X and being happy with it so they can move on and finish the transition to OS X. I would not be surprised at all if apple did not charge for any OS X updates until OS 11.

I would be willing to bet my iBook that apple will not charge for 10.2

I think that Apple created OS X to sell hardware, but they also made OS X because they promised us a modern OS and that we were in dire need of a modern OS. Apple could have simply created the Aqua interface and stuck it in OS 9. Apple wants to sell hardware, but Apple's main reason for OS X is becasue of their promise and a dire need of a modern OS.

Michaelm8000 is 100% right. I know plenty of people on the internet who bought Macs just because of OS X.

Yes, they made OS X to sell hardware, but they were in more of a dire need to get a modern OS out there. It is a combination of the two, like I said. They were in a dire need of a modern OS and they created it also to sell more hardware.
