Need to record some conversations from a portable cassette recorder to my iMac 24 intel...I already have mini-stereo cable which fits the cassette recorder
but not sure how to connect to iMac.
The cable plug is 3.5mm plug to 3.5mm plug.

You need an adapter like the Griffin iMic.

No he doesn't. The iMac has a line-level audio input built-in, with 3.5 mm jack.
To the O/P - just connect the cassette player to the audio in jack of the iMac.
I think you should be able to record using Garage Band, but that's a bit of a heavywieght tool just for recording.
Audacity is available for free, but I think that the $40 fee for Amadeus Pro is well worth it.
You will need to experiment with the volume control on your cassette player - have it at the highest setting that doesn't cause distortion.
