sound problems

I recently download software to convert music tapes to CD's and lost all sound on my computer. I have solved that issue. However, now I cannot adjust the volume using the

the icon in the menu bar. I can only adjust the volume using Audio MIDI Setup. I have since deleted the software that I uploaded but I'm afraid it has modified some setting that has disabled the volume key. Can anyone help?

    A couple o quick questions

    Which app did you download?

What error messages if any appeared?

Also check to see if the sound output has been changed in system preference => sound

I will help further with knowing which app as I do a lot of sound recording and some is via tapes.

    Try this:

In System Preferences, click on Sound.

    Click on the Output tab.

Make sure that the output device selected is something like "Built in Output"

The software may have changed this setting to be another device.

    Good luck!

I had the same issue just today. You will need to clear PRAM and VRAM.

Restart your computer and press CMD+OPTION+P+R

Hold that for a while until you hear the startup chime a couple times

Then restart your computer again and press CMD+OPTION+N+V

Hold that until the screen looks like it is starting up but turns totally black instead and white text begins to scroll.

Your computer's sound functions should be fully restored. I imagine you are using Leopard?
