How do I stop firing up external drives?

I have two external drives:

1. Firewire 400 for Super Duper cloning.

2. Firewire 800 for Time Machine incremental backups.

If I go to a web site, like Walgreens, and try to upload photos, anytime that I click on BROWSE, to choose my photos, my iMac fires up my external drives to let me look through them. I don't need for this to happen. Is there a way to have OS X (10.5.1) ignore any external drives in these instances?

By the way, I now normally do not have drive #1 powered up, since I really don't need it running until I want to do a clone.

I just switch my HDs off; saves a lot of hassle and also keeps 'em safer.

That works fine, except, the whole idea of Time Machine is for lots of backups, therefor, I'd need to keep that drive on. I guess I could just turn it on for a while sometime during the day.

I wonder, can I use Automator to turn on, and off, that drive at some point during the day?

If you can build some sort of peripheral robot that will flip the switch on your external drive. Yeeeeaaaahhhh.
