software update question

Is there a way to get rid of all the language support packages without downloading them? I am never going to download them, and would like it to just be able to say "your software is up to date" again when there is nothing there that I want to download.

I wish there was a better solution than this, because eventually you end up with a bunch of "inactive" updates in there. It would be better if you could just designate an update as "Something I'll never want so quit reminding me about it."

That's exactly what inactive updates are. Why would you otherwise inactivate it if you wanted it? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Yeah, but what he's saying is that there should be a way to just delete them and not being reminded that they're there.

How can you be sure you won't need them at some point (never is a long time)? If inactive, they don't show up in the Update window unless you ask it to show inactive.

Well, I'm pretty damn sure---and if I did, I would imagine it would also be available to DL from the Apple web site anyway....it is just going to suck some day having 50 things in there I am never going to download...

What EmAn said is exactly what I was trying to ask...just be able to delete them from the list.

EDIT: OK, I just made them all inactive, and that seems to be a good enough of a solution. I just get a dialogue box saying that I have no new updates but rather 12 inactive ones and do I want to seem them. That seems good enough for me...I hope 10.1.3 comes out Monday as rumored so I can have a new update to see what happens with it then.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I just have my software update check automatically every day for active downloads. With auto-check you don't get any dialogues except when there actually are new (active) downloads. This way I never have to worry about it, if software update doesn't start automatically @ boot, then there's nothing new for me to download.

Sure, they don't show up, but every single time you search for updates, it reminds you that they're there and asks if you want to make them active. It's ridiculous. By making them inactive Apple should assume you don't need them until you specifically request them. In other words, there should be another menu command: display inactive updates.

Then once displayed you can reactivate them if you choose. Reminding us that they're there every time we use the updater is really poor design, so long as we cannot delete them.

Anyone know if there is a system file somewhere that you can alter (a text file or terminal trick maybe) and make the updater stop its stupid reminder tricks?

Like I said, if you have it check automatically for updates it won't bother you with inactive downloads. The only time it comes up is if you open up SU and check for updates manually.

I'm saying it one more time so that I'm sure you didn't miss the point.
