Basic image editor for OS X

Does anyone have any suggestions for a basic image editor for OS X? I would prefer a free program. I'm currently using Goldberg but it doesn't really allow you to edit the image. I also tried The Gimp under XFree86 but it wasn't exactly stable. I trialed GraphicConverter when it was first Carbonised but I found it to be very sluggish. Anyone know if it's better and maybe worth buying now?

    Photoshop Elements I think is like $100 or so, and is the closest thing to what the pros use IMO.

    You might want to try GraphicConverter again. I've always found it to work well. Elements is good but it's not carbonized yet. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    I downloaded and tried Graphic Converter. Seems good enough except that it destroys the lovely 128x128 icon that all my digital camera pictures have by default and replaces them with an ugly OS 9 one. I went through the preferences and turned all the icon stuff off but now all images that I view in the Browser get a plain/non-preview GraphicConvertor icon... Did I miss a preference somewhere? Is there some way to get the nice default icon back to all my pictures?

    Check out <a href="http://www.caffeinesoft.com"; target="_blank">Caffeine Software</a>'s PixelNHance, which is a nice little freeware utility, or the free version of their heavy-duty TIFFany3.

    Under preferences-&gt;save-&gt;Custon icon there are settings to create larger icons. Works fine for me. I use GCs browser view exclusively for picture viewing... I haven't found anything better.

    That link should read <a href="http://www.caffeinesoft.com/"; target="_blank">http://www.caffeinesoft.com/</a>;

    I'm downloading some apps now. Haven't tried them yet, but they seem cool from the screenshots...

    I'll second the recommendation for PixelNhance. I just got it and it seems to be exactly what iPhoto needs in the next revision. It's not as comprehensive as graphic converter, but it's exactly what I need to work with my digital pictures a little. I'm downloading tiffany right now to see if it's as cool. Gotta love up and coming software that's Mac OS X only

    ** edit **

    After talking to the good folks at CaffeineSoft it appears that they are fixing the filename extension issues, and I have no other complaints.

    I recommend GraphicConverter. It is the most incredible program out there at that level. I'm still finding new things it does I didn't know about.
