AOL on OSX through DSL (iMac)

OK, my mother received her new iMac and needs to run AOL to access their proprietary chat rooms (yes, I have tried to convince her to abandon AOL). She connects to the Internet using DSL, and that works perfectly, using both Firefox and Safari.



Over the phone, I helped her install AOL, set it up to use TCP/IP, selecting DSN from their menu items. Everything seems to be configured properly, but AOL's server can't start up a session. Could this be a firewall issue? She uses Verizon DSL. I'm reasonably sure we set AOL up correctly, but as I mentioned, this was over the phone (too snowy to travel the 50 miles today). Any advice?

    There's alot of information your not telling us.

    Is the problem that she can't connect to the internet or that she can't load the AOL web page?

    What specifically is she trying to do on AOL? Only chat rooms? IM chat? Get emails?

    I think the issue may be due to the current AOL client not being compatible with Leopard. There's a beta version at http://beta.aol.com/projects.php?project=desktop_mac that claims to be Leopard-compatible. As soon as I can, I'll walk my mother through the install and setup and report back if it works.

    The version at http://beta.aol.com/projects.php?project=desktop_mac was able to connect to the AOL service running on Mac OS 10.5.2.



    We'll see what issues await now that it's actually running...

    Looks like the AOL beta can't really do anything other than connect. I installed Windows XP using Bootcamp so AOL could run.



    Of note, Bootcamp requires a Windows XP SP2 disk to install. For others like me who who only have a pre-SP2 Windows XP install disk, I found these instructions on Slipstreaming to be helpful. Creating the slipstreamed disk was kind of a pain, but it installed.



    Bootcamp worked perfectly, even installing the Windows drivers for the iMac componants from the Leopard install disk. Nice.
