Purchasing Vista for Mac

Where is everyone getting their Windows Vista to run on their Macs? I'm interested in running Vista on a Mac Pro under VMware Fusion and I would need to buy one of these editions (Business, Enterprise & Ultimate). I don't know much about installing Windows (used one at work for 5 years), but I would assume Windows that came with a Windows based computer could not be used for an upgrade to use on a Mac.

Any special places for good prices since it looks like I'm going to have to pay for the full package of one these editions of Vista Business, Enterprise & Ultimate?

    Buy one of the OEM versions - Home Premium is around $110.

    I would recommend Home Premium, it at least has DVD playback built-in. Business is fine too, but it has more enterprise features that you'll probably never use.

    Ultimate is a waste of money IMO, although newegg has the OEM version of that for $170.

    Newegg also has 64-bit versions of Vista too - I've only used XP 64-bit, which was really fast, but 64-bit drivers were hard to come by, Vista is supposed to be much better.

    I haven't had any problems with Vista since last summer, when Nvidia released better drivers, and it's been quite stable - I use my Vista Business desktop as a server for my Mac Mini (10.5.2) and Vista Home Premium laptop, and I've had no issues with SMB shares, other than I wished Time Machine supported it. \

    Thanks for the information. The only reason I listed these (VMware Fusion---Vista editions (Business, Enterprise & Ultimate) was that VMware website said that was what was supported. None of the Home editions are listed as supported. And I think Microsoft prohibits using the Home editions in virtualization.

    Nah, MS reversed themsleves (probably realized they'd lose out one some extra licenses ($$$));

    I would recommend 2 GB for Vista though - I can run Vista fine on 1 GB, with a real desktop, but it's much happier with two (even though I rarely go over 1 GB used when I have nearly all the Office 2007 apps open on my laptop, and Opera).

    Wow! Thanks for the information on the change by Microsoft. I missed that change and I even subscribe to Macworld.

    I got on the Chatline at VMware and asked if they supported the Home Premium version under Fusion and they said they only supported Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise & Ultimate Editions). I'll have to do some more checking on another program. I just don't won't to run Vista on the Internet "naked" in Boot Camp.

    I purchased Vista Home from Best Buy. Running it under Parallels on a MacBook 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory without problem.

    I've read that the 3D effects of Aero in Vista Ultimate can significantly slow down your computer. I would be hesitant to enable Aero (or purchase Ultimate) as it adds little benefit for what most of us are using Windows for on our Mac.

    These programs have always supported the installation of basic versions of Vista. It was the support teams for these programs that did not answer questions or help people with the associated installations, and that was only because it was against the Microsoft end user license agreement. I imagine they've reversed themselves since then as Microsoft has changed their stance.

    I would have thought so too, so I asked Vm Ware (in and IChat on their website) and they said still only supported the Ultimate and Business versions:
