2 monitors, 2 keyboards, 2 users, same time?

After some serious googling it would appear that this is impossible, but I thought I'd plumb the depths of knowledge here to make sure.

Basically, I have a MacBook with an external monitor. I'd like to be able to get another keyboard and mouse and somehow set it up so that my daughter could open her account on the MacBook and I would have mine open on the external monitor, controlled by a different keyboard at the same time.

I believe it is possible to do this with virtualization, but then you are running two operating systems and things would be slow. Not as elegant.

Any ideas

Virtualization would be the only way to have two accounts open at once, but even then, the machine only has one set of inputs. The two mice would fight one another, rather than create a second pointer.
