Updating an Unlocked iPhone

I have an iPhone which has been unlocked in order to use with a Canadian carrier. I currently have firmware v1.0.2...which is getting old. i heard something a long time ago saying that i cannot update the firmware on my iphone or it will be "permanently inoperable." Has that changed? can i Update and then just unlock it with one of the unlocking methods? what are my options?
