Hi I have a G4 12inch powerbook

It's about 2.5 years old... used mainly at home

I've been reading online here and there that a new OS X update has lowered the temperature at which the fans kick in (is this true and if so, can i change it back? and is that even safe?)

Also, for some odd reason the fan now seems very very loud as opposed to before... is there anything I can do??

THANK YOU

Download G4 fancontrol and set the temperature thresholds higher. You need to adjust the 3 sliders until it sets the fans the way you want vs actual temp of the sensors vs noise. I find that my PB15 fans hardly ever go over 3000 rpm. However, my iBook fans will shoot up over 6000 rpm and even more than 7000 at some stage. iBook can get loud but not as annoying as the MacBook. PB is still almost silent with fans going full blast!. These are less than 3K rpm so barely audible. I suspect your PB12 has high-speed fans that probably cause the racket that is annoying you now. Good luck.
