ibook g4 external monitor question

Let me start by saying that I am completely clueless when it comes to Apple products. Hopefully some of you nice people can help. A friend of mine called to tell me that he was given an ibook G4. It still has original packaging and everything. The problem was that his friend had it for a few weeks and dropped it. The screen doesn't work anymore. It is mostly black with a little white at the very bottom. My friend hooked it up to an external monitor and while there is a picture it is weird. He said that it is like a mirrored image four times that overlaps each other. Four pointers. Four sets of icons. ETC ETC. He can't see the whole desktop because of this. Is there any way to fix this? The external monitor is pretty old (like 96 or something) could this be the problem?
