Tuesday's announcement will be more than just server hardware.

For one thing, the servers will be more than just G4's refitted into a rackmount enclosure with different power supplies.

Tuesday's announcement will announce the fruits of partnerships Apple has formed with server software companies over the past while. At least one major database company is poised to announce and demonstrate new software for OS X server.

The new rackmount is geared towards more than just educational customers. Enterprise-level solutions will be demonstrated.

think secret is saying the tues server press conf. is 3 hours long (at least they blocked out that much time)

interesting, what to talk about for 3 hours if its just a g4 rack.

new software mentioned above may mean apple is jumping into the enterprise server market with both feet.

Just a reminder as to why I'd suspect Oracle over anyone else: Remember that Larry Ellison is on Apple's Board of Directors. No doubt in my mind that if there's a professional enterprise software package in mind for these new rackmounts, that Oracle definitely has a hand in it.

You do realize that the number of people here who've ever used an Avid is pretty low, right?

I knew that Avid sold pumped-up PowerMacs (and WinTel towers) and I knew that they offered higher-end integrated systems, but how would racks fit in? Are Avid going to stuff them with PCI cards and sell them as Avid systems, or are Avid systems going to exploit Apple racks right out of the box? Something in between?

    Spill it, Bodhi.

Larry Ellison is also Steve's best friend and an insatiable gossip hound, not to mention the world's gayest billionaire. He's bred so many rumors and spoken to so many publications about upcoming Apple stuff that I have often wondered if he was MacWeek's "Mac the Knife" (now MacEdition's Naked Mole Rat).

Though such familiarity does not always breed loyalty, Bill Campbell , the CEO of Intuit, is also on Apple's board, and yet they seem to be phasing out their products for the Mac.

I think Oracle and Filemaker are givens as far as tomorrow's announcement goes, but I also think we'll be hearing something about clutstering, and maybe some new piece of "digital hub" hardware. I think we may also finally see some new development with Apple's PowerSchool software, it's been a little over a year since they bought the company out, yet we haven't seen a single public demonstration of it. Maybe we'll get a little more information on the whole "Nothing Real" buyout if we're lucky.

It seems only natural that we'd see an update of the Pro desktops to go along with the servers, but given yesterday's announcement of the Pro rebate promotion, this seems a little unlikely.

At the very least, I'd like to see updated iBooks, even if as a side announcement. Seeing as how Apple introduced the current form factor a year ago this month, and with education purchasing season gearing up, I think it's only natural we'll see something new.

    ciao,

    michael

some type of device to remotely administer the server. Or maybe a head for the headless. Airport equipped (I know, I know, the bandwidth requirements for streaming video information would be enormous, but hey, we're speculating, right??). Of course, this device would be useful in other capacities, like, say, a PDA?? Communicate seamlessly with other macs running Jaguar (Rendezvous, anyone?) Shipping to coincide with Jag's release. At any rate, it'll be more than just rackmounts. (and this relates to OS X how?)

    scadboy,

I remember we had a little tiff about who gets to say what about gays and in what context.

Do you now intend to use 'gayest' in the slightly derogatory but mostly just juvenile "That's SO gay!" sense, or do you just mean to say that he's

    the most homosexual CEO ever?

If you are actually gay, and you're using it in the former sense, is it through a feeling of entitlement? The way blacks use 'nigger.'

Or, have you just mellowed out?

Or, were you just bullshitting for the sake of argument last time around?

What gives? You hereby forfeit the right to complain about anyone else's use of the term 'gay'

Matsu... if you don't have anything to contribute to the thread, then your query is best answered by a private message.

    But for the record:

Firstly, I've seen a few interviews with Larry Ellison, including an hour long special on CNN some time ago, and though I don't know the man personally, he strikes me as more than a little queer, excuse me... homosexual. And yes, I know he's engaged.

Secondly, I don't recall ever having a "tiff" with you regarding the usage of the word gay, if you're referring to <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000691"; target="_blank">this thread</a>, then I'll point out that I was not complaining about you using the word "gay," but rather the fact that you interrupted a thread to share an off-color and off-topic remark relating to homosexuals. Much like you're doing now...

You really seem to enjoy raising the ire of the few gay members of this board for no reason other than to start a verbal fist fight. I.E.

    <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000910"; target="_blank">fags</a> and your comments <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000887"; target="_blank">on Rosie O'Donnell</a> , and <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000648"; target="_blank">Valentines Day</a>.

What exactly is the basis of your fixation on homosexuality? Why don't you just go suck some dick, get over it, and stop harassing people.

    ciao,

    michael

I'm not too excited yet? Anything they announce will likely have nothing to do with me anyways. It's not like its Macworld or anything..

I'm just curious if there'll be any kind of feed(s) from the press conference sent out to the Apple Stores. Sounds like it'd be too expensive to do, and besides, if they're cancelling established seminars because of this announcement WITHOUT providing offers to view the announcement then I'd suspect that they may be inviting their education customers only...to show off a PowerSchool demo running on the new servers.

I, for one, shall phone up our local Apple Regional HQ in the morning to see if they'll be showing the satcast.

And hey, you two having the spat....kiss and make up, you're distracting us from this thread.
