Recognising Quarz Extreme (does it work on a TiBook 550?)

Is there a way to tell if Quarz Extreme is working or not in one's machine? I'd like to know if it's running on my TiBook 550...

Uh, you know that Quartz Extreme is part of the as-of-yet-unreleased upgrade to OS X, right? Are you running the developer's preview version?

Yes I do know that it is part of Jaguar. And yes I do run it, but I don't know if QE works or not...anyway I'll switch back to 10.1.4 asap: I don't want to stick with a (VERY good) beta until late summer.

I do not believe the revision B Powerbook G4s will be supported with Quartz Extreme.

I make this statement based on the last Apple eNews email.

    [quote]

"If you can hardly wait for this summer to install the next major version of Mac OS X, you?ll be pleased to know that our new PowerBook G4?with its ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics processor?is ready to take advantage of one of Jaguar?s exciting new features: Quartz Extreme.

Thanks to Quartz Extreme, Jaguar will be able to use the graphics processor to speed the rendering of 2D and 3D graphics, leaving the PowerPC G4 processor to tend to application-specific needs.

The result: graphics performance on the new PowerBook G4 will be even snappier than it is today, and the new processor already provides unparalleled 2D, 3D and multimedia graphics performance."<hr></blockquote>

If you have the developer's preview then either you should be a programer. Which in this case you wouldn't even need to ask the question of how to find out.

SO I'm guessing it's through OTHER means.

Well since I don't have the preview myself, even I have a couple of ideas along the lines of using "Developer's tools", "CPU usage", etc- to find out.

Come on, we know what QE does, all you have to do is to snoop around.Apple isn't going to intenionally mislead developers on such trival grounds.

If you can't figure that out, better leave it to more experianced people.

The "revision B" PowerBook G4s (with the 16 MB Radeon Mobility) will be supported by QE.

You are right, I'm not a developer, but my brother is. I just installed Jaguar on my PB for curiosity. Yes, I checked out the CPU usage, but I didn't notice much improvement, so I thought that QE doesn't support rev. B PB G4. I wanted to know if there were a SURE way (i.e., looking at Apple System Profiler for particular framework or something like this) to determinate whether QE runs or not. Despite the almost identical CPU usage from 10.1.4 and 10.2DP while minimizing a window or magnifying the dock, I can see strange bugs in windows' design. This is what suggested me that QE works in PB rev B, but at the moment just in an incomplete way. Just my though. Anyway I switched back to 10.1.4 and will play with Jaguar on my brother's machine...

From all the reports on pirated copies I have read, I really don't know if QE is implemented yet. Like zaza, most say they really can't tell, even when using machines that should support it. If it is implemented, it must not be the great improvement we are hoping for? at least not in this version.

Or it is there just in alpha stage which may be just barely working. Maybe Apple has the concept there just not working very well yet. This is an alpha release.

I was just reporting on what I had read so far. A thread at MacNN, however, has a link to video that seems to show some pretty impressive stuff with DVD's.<a href="http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=46&t=006296"; target="_blank">Quartz Extreme Thread</a>

thanks for the link- but it seems that page is down due to "excessive bandwidth consumption."
