How does firefox eat more resources than handbrake!?

Firefox 3 is using 17.9 percent of my cpu, 9 threads, 86mb of real memory, and a gig of virtual memory when just open, not even displaying a page. I'm confused at how it is topping Handbrake encoding a DVD, or so activity monitor.app tells me.

Is this normal?

    Probably.

My stats are similar with FF3, but only using 1.6% of the CPU; it just doesn't concern me at all, unless the browser starts running slow for some reason.
