Hints from iMac hardware...

Too bad I couldn't post 3 days ago, and bump Fran's thread.....but I digress.

Does anyone else find the renewed inclusion of the microphone to the iMac as an indicator of future enhancements to the OS? My big 'one more thing' speculation, were I able to post it last week was that speech recognition

would come alive in OSX, that we would need powerful machines (i.e. > 1GHz) to be able to pull it off....so here they are: bad-ass systems we can talk to!

o.k. the iMac got a big bump in it's power [hopefully the pro sys. next]. Who thinks speech interation is anywhere on the horizon?

What's "renewed" about it?

    Ooops, my bad. I just seem to recall that people had gripes about lack of a mic.

    Me=bad.

    I believe that the current range of G4 towers have no microphone port, though the towers used to. It seems like a pretty dopey way to save 2 bucks on the cost of manufacturing a unit.

    I'd certainly like to see microphone ports return to being standard across the range.

    The problem with talking to your computer is that you sound like an ass, even when the computer understands you perfectly, let alone when you have to repeat yourself.

    ...

    *in office setting*

    Me: "Launch Enterouge"

    Mac: "Okay."

    Co-worker (whispering): "Go to 'BrittanySpears-dot-com"

    Me: "Heh."

    Mac: "No way, you pervert"

    ::: or :::

    Me: "Check my email."

    Mac: "What?"

    Me: "Cheeeck - My - EEEeeeemaail"

    Mac: "What?"

    ...

    As long as humans can overhear what we're doing, we'll neeeever talk to our computers.

    I don't know what the big deal is that people can't move the mouse 2 inches and click "Entourage" in the dock. Surely this is faster than repeating yourself until the computer understands.

    And if you've had both your hands amputated, or something, there *IS* ViaVoice for OS X and it comes with a USB Mic... controls your computer and lets you dictate in just about any app.

    The Blue and White G3s had a microphone port and actually came with a microphone (had one at work). My G4 450 (first one that came out) has a microphone port but didn't come with a mic!

    Don't know about the current Towers.

    I forgot about that - my G3 came with a Mic too...it was basically a clear version of the old Plaintalk mic. I'm assuming you can't get them anymore since Apple's moved to promoting USB audio input.

    Yes, "Sawtooth" G4's came with a Mic Port but no Mic. The Digital Audio Macs & QS's have no Mic Port (read M's with 133 Mhz buses). Personally, I wish they left them on.

    Yah. Seems a bit crazy they are not even including them on the Powermacs... *Hopes for Microphone Port on G5*

    how about this then?

    enter your room, your comptuer is sitting asleep, say "wakeup" it awakes, as your taking your coat and hat off and setlling in be speaking to your mac "load internet explorer", and iTunes playlist "funky tracks" then as you sit down your already there, I think it would be pretty cool, especially if you could tell your computer to goto different webpages, and make use the FILE EDIT VIEW...etc tab items

    all with your voice. sure its aminescule time saving device(like probably 10 seconds or so but its more about convience I guess)well its one of htose technologies that most people will never need or want, but would be still pretty coool
