I have heard good things about -- although have not personally tried -- a nifty little app call Visage, which supposedly makes it very easy to change the loader and login screens in OS X.
Like Starfleet said, I see mine so infrequently I don't really think much about it.

visage looks pretty cool, i like what it lets you do with the dock, but i have one question, i once saw somone in my school w/ an ibook and the dock was completely transparent, as in no outline or anything. does anyone know how to do this?
Rename aqua blue.jpg or what ever in /library/desktop pictures/ i and what ever you replace aquablue with becomes your default background and your login background. Just drop an image in that folder and rename it aqua blue.jpg
go to www.resexcellence.com and you can download a ton of startup screens, login panels, icons, ahcks etc. Aweosme site.
PS I changed my bootup panel with the one the subtly says:
MacOS X
Because Windows Sucks...
like others, I 'unfortunately' dont see it often seeing that I reboot once in a blue moon.
Heck, I just travelled throughought Italy and Belgium for the last 2 weeks and havent shut off my computer yet! sleep baby sleep!
Yeah, I live in my girlfriend's basement right now, and her Mom wasn't too happy when the electric bill jumped $20 (not too much if you ask me, I'd pay that for her) after I got my new mac, so I turn it off at night. Thus I see my login screen daily. About the transparent dock, you can get the fore-mentioned app, or there is some way to make a transparent PDF, I had to have someone do that for me. But make three very small transparent PDF's and name them right, left, and middle.pdf. Put those three in the folder system/core services/dock.app/resources. Just make sure you move the origonals somewhere else for safe keeping.

Anyone have the orignal login screens available? Including the 'login.nib' I kinda accidendtly erased mine
The one have now is ok, but I'd like to be able to go back.

Well I searched the Essentials.pkg but it wasn't there. Oh well no biggie I suppose.
haven't seen my log screen since i set my comp to autologin. that way if (gasp) i restart and go do something, then i wont have to type my name/pass and still have to watch shyt loading (like classic). even with smp, other shyt is slower sometimes when some things r loadin.
Well... hmm. I just checked my Essentials package and, sure enough, the loginwindow.app isn't there. Regardless, there's a copy of it at /System/Library/CoreServices on the CD that should be the same.
Go to system/library/CoreServices/loginwindow/resources/ and open one of the other login.nib's (one in another language) and just change the word's 'name', 'password' 'Log In', etc. back to english in Interface Builder (in your developer/applications folder). And save it as login.nib in the english folder.
All the information while working on the login panel in interface builder will be in German or whatever language you used, but it serves the purpose.

I so rarely ever see my login screen that I haven't bothered to change it.
How do you change the background picture ?
Mine is desperately (sp ?) blue
