Macbook Trackpad Button Not Working

My Macbook has been a little difficult since the outset - have had to replace the entire laptop once, and the battery thrice (luckily all under warranty).
About a week after installing my latest battery - the trackpad button just stopped working. The trackpad itself is fine - i can move the cursor around freely - however the actual button is not working. It still makes a clicking sound - so it does not sound broken - it just doesn't work.
Furthermore - if i plug in an external USB mouse - the same problem arises - I can move the cursor around but clicking the button is ineffective.
Any ideas?
