How do I set up a network on Mac OS X?

in macOS edited January 2014
My dad has a network between the 2 Windows 98 machines upstairs and I want to add my Mac downstairs to the network so we can share a printer. Right now they are all hooked into a router and everyone can get on the internet fine but I can't figure out how to get the printer to work. Please help. It seems like it should work because I can ping both computers. This is just really confusing to me. Again any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: The printer is not plugged into the router. I just want to use it through the other computer upstairs.

If I recall correctly, Mac-to-Windows printer sharing is not working in Mac OS X yet.

Oh man. What about in OS 9? Could I set it up in 9 and just boot into 9 everytime I want to print?

There is a program available called "DAVE", I can't remember who makes it off hand, and I don't know if it supports printer sharing, but I know it does support flie sharing, so you can send a file to the PC and print it that way.

I am 99% positive OS 9 does not have built in printer sharing.

For now you're going to have to share the file you want to print and bring it to the PC to print. I don't know of any apps that will let you do it.

Here's a fun tool to help you out with it: <a href="http://www.tightvnc.com"; target="_blank">Tight VNC</a>. Install it on one of the PCs (preferrably the fastest) on the network that works with the printer and control it with an OSX VNC client (like VNC Thing) and control the PC to get the file from the network share and print it out.

Thanks for all your help. Does anyone know if Jaquar will have a solution to this or has it not been mentioned? I guess I'll just transfer it through Zip disk or one of the file sharing programs you talked about for now.
