I just got my iPhone home and noticed when I play a music track it only comes from the left speaker grille on the base. If I cover that grille it goes almost mute, whereas there's no change in volume covering the right side.
Is that normal?

Sounds like you got the special "monophonic" version.

I now the external speakers are mono, but the levels should be the same from both speakers?

There is only one speaker. It is on the left. Microphone on the right. Turn on a ringtone and place your thumb over each side and see for yourself.
