Wow, no thread on this? LAW SUIT? 3G speeds GLOBAL=SLOW iPhone
If you go to Apple forums, you will see that some are posting from all around the world that the 3G iPhone is very slow.
I spoke with three (3) apple folks who all told me while their area is ALL BLUE (total 3G coverage) they get ZERO bars when in home, and the 3G is the slowest of all the phones.
Some say its the network but I have tested other 3G ATT phones and one was twice as fast. My impression is that Apple did something to the antenna to keep the pathetic battery life better (thats why other phones are heavier)....
In a nutshell, 3G=twice as fast, half the price= WORLD WIDE SLOW SPEEDS with increased $10 a month in some places sound like a law suit, class action, either Apple or ATT are going to have to do something.
This is not a 10,000 macbook battery problem but a world wide millions plus problem. They are going to have to give out a new battery, reduce data plan, and fix via firmware or recall.
Something is wrong, very, very, wrong and Apple needs to address this.

Having read another Apple forum, it seems that there are a few cities where most are getting piss poor 3G service while other cities get just fine service
Things might be different where the system is new/still under development.

Keep in mind, this is what I have noticed, after reading and reading some more, it seems its the iPhone, not the network as some of you would suggest. I am in an area covered in BLUE, deep 3G, as are others. I have used and compared a 3G iPhone to other phones and have seen the other phones be twice as fast on the same network, (AT&T).
I have also confirmed with several Apple fellows, that they stated that even though the coverage is supposed to be great, they too suffer the same problem. I am a developer (software) and have AT&T as well as Apple friends.
If it was, as some of you suggest, the NETWORK, the other phones would not be faster or would be at least the same. This is NOT what I am seeing. I am seeing what everyone else GLOBAL level is seeing, stating, and that is the 3G iPhone is NOT fast and many report that on the same network be it AT*T or ORANGE, that the iPhone is slower.
My theory is that either Apple has a bad design (Antenna) or that the iPhone is throttled down for longer battery life, meaning the CHIP (3G) is under powered on purpose to make the phone last though the day. Note the SIM card installer that shipped (in case it's a sim card solution) or that the new 3G now have screws near the bottom, the old one did not, and that the battery is no longer soldered on, whereas on the old one it was, so, I think Apple is going to realize this is not a few hundred bad batteries but millions of new phone users that are NOT getting what they paid for.
In the United States: 3G=Twice as fast, half the price and AT&T adding $10 more per month = NOT TRUE= possible law suits if not rectified, yet this is global, not just the US and again, if it were the network, the other phones would also suffer, so the theory of a bad network doesn't hold water as the other devices work fine and more often than not, twice as fast as the iPhone.
For US citizens, go to a local AT&T store, test the iPhone at testmyiphone.com and then test another smart phone and you will see that the iPhone is not only slower, but also has less bars than the other phones leading me to believe that its an antenna issue.

I'm not sure how it compares to other phones, or if you can even compare the browsing experience to what is offered on the iPhone. If areas are having solid problems I would be inclined to believe that there are network troubles -- no surprise given how young the AT&T 3G network is. Internationally, who knows. Apple really may have done something to optimize battery life (if so, fine by me).
