I was going to make a new thread for this last one, but I'll just post here. The Mac Help Viewer, as you may already know, has undergone a major upgrade. Also, a lot of the help files have been rewritten to actually be pretty helpful! Anyway, someone here was concerned about how the Help Viewer wouldn't let you resize the text. The new toolbar gives buttons for just that:
damn you StarFleetX....you just made me download QT 6, which i told myself i wouldn't do, that i would wait for Jag 10.2 to be released......nice movie of iChat though....here's to hoping the QT 6 beta doesn't mess with my system (so far so good)....g
ps good to see somebody is keeping in touch with macintosh....
Heh, Macintosh ain't all bad. He's been keeping busy with some iMovie stuff and a musical project he like to call "Ruining the Classics." He'll also be working with the campus Apple reps during the MW keynote presentation this week.
The music sounds so familiar...

Yep! That's a tune from Mario 2 played by a band named Estradasphere and the other was a track from the Actraiser Symphonic Suite.
edit: I should note that these movies *really* don't do justice to the apps. I mean, the motions are incredibly smooth. Snapz on my Mac just cant capture fast enough to show it.
hey, starf....i never had a problem with macintosh, but then i'm older and fairly mellow...tell him thegelding sez hi...and thanks for all the clips....looking forward to 10.2...even thinking of doing a clean install and starting from scratch.....g
so, what was the name of it!

I assume you are referring to the Mario song, right? It's Super Mario Bros. 2 SuperBuckJazz OC ReMix. How is FTP browsing in the Finder? ie does it block the rest of the Finder while loading large directories, or is it correctly multi-threaded?

Well, ftp permissions are currently borked. When I login to my server, all the permissions are just wrong and I can't write to anything. You can connect with either ftp://ftp.server.com or ftp://username[email protected] - the only difference being that the former will give you a login/pass dialog when it connects.
As far as speed goes, it's pretty quick. My largest directory only has 405 files, and it loaded before I even had time to try doing anything else in the finder.
Interesting new icon worth noting here:
This loads as a very brief placeholder until the Finder gathers the file type information. This is a sign of much better threading because previously the Finder would just stall before loading said files in a directory. Did I say *just* the Finder? No, these are also used in open/save dialogs when browsing the filesystem.
Neat vids, but don't you feel kinda 'dirty' using an early build of 10.2? I mean, I feal dirty just using quicktime 6. I don't like the word 'beta' tagged onto my computer. I want rock solid x.0 to work. Thanks again for the vids.
Thanks a lot Starfleet. Seems Apple has put a lot of thought behind those new features. I don't quite get where the "blank" icon appears while the finder gathers info?
What happens if the volume is suddenly disconnected? Does the finder stall before timing out, or is there some kind of instant check?
Is minimise in place back?
How does the Finder deal with file typing? Does it correctly manage to identify files that lack file extension *and* file type (by parsing the header or so)?

Oh, and one Q on this behavior: Is this also true for contextual menus (think dock items)?

As far as I can tell, no, the Dock menus do not use this temporary icon. They're still slow to load large directories, but not quite as slow as 10.1.
And before anyone asks, no, SLF does not work on Dock items.
What happens if the volume is suddenly disconnected? Well, it's still mounted. I try opening directories and they just load as empty.. but.. wait... aha, spinning beachball time! I suppose Apple just hasn't finished this part.
[quote]How does the Finder deal with file typing?

Sadly, there have been no changes in this area. As far as I can tell, it's the exact same as in 10.1.

cool iChat window opening:

Yes, they too need QT6. Why? Because I'm too lazy to switch off the MPEG4 compressor.
