LG Electronics plans to introduce a Blu-ray player that will serve double duty as a conduit for streaming video through Netflix. LG said the BD300 Network Blu-Ray Disc Player would arrive in stores this fall for a price "well under $500."

The unit will serve as a standard Blu-ray player and allow users to rent online a catalog of 10,000 movies and TV shows available on Netflix's streaming service, though it will require a Netflix subscription.

"LG was the first of our technology partners to publicly embrace our strategy for getting the Internet to TV," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. "And it will be the first to introduce a Blu-ray player that will instantly stream movies and TV episodes Netflix to the TV."

LG and Netflix plan to unveil the BD300 at a demonstration in New York City on Aug. 7. Microsoft plans to roll out a similar service this fall through the Xbox 360 game console and its Xbox Live online platform.
