Is your account set up properly? I ask as I just had a similar problem with Mail on my Mac. I could access and read incoming mail all I wanted. I just could not send mail. It turned out that I had three things wrong with my account settings and I wasn't being properly authenticated. (My ISP recently upgraded its mail system and problems were: The ISP added the mail domain to the login name. In the latest setup instructions SSL was not turned on. I had it on. And the ISP turned on Password authentication.)
